PURPOSE: To provide a throuw away tip with improved mass-productivity and improved quality at low cost, by coating the surface of a throuw away tip made of tool steel, e.g., high speed tool steel, with one or more layers of carbide, nitride, carbonitride of Ti, Zr, Hf by physical metallizing method.
CONSTITUTION: Throw away tip 1, a substrate of high speed steel manufactured particularly by powder metallurgy, is set on a base 2, and the vacuum vessel 3 is evacuated 4. Then Ar gas is introduced 9, a voltage is applied to the base by a base power source 7 to produce glow discharge in order to clean the base 2, and the vessel 3 is evacuated once again. Hereafter N2 gas is introduced 9 into the vessel 3, and an electron gun is operated so as to melt and evaporate Ti contained in a crucible 12 by electron beam 11. At the same time a voltage is applied to an ionization electrode 14 to ionize Ti vapor and N2 gas and the substrate temp. is kept at 500°C or lower. In this condition, introduction 9 of N2 gas is stopped and C2H2 gas is introduced. As the result, coating layers are formed which consist of a titanium nitride layer 3μ thick on the substrate 1, and of titanium carbide layer 3μ thick on the titanium nitride layer
