This time recorder is provided with a recorder main body 1 having a card insertion port 2, a printing means 5 arranged in the recorder main body 1, a time measuring means 12 arranged in the recorder main body 1, a liquid crystal display 3 for displaying a time measured by the time measuring means 12, and an arithmetic control circuit 8 for controlling the printing means 5. The time recorder is provided with an inserting direction detecting means 13 of the time card 4 into the card insertion port 2. In this case, the arithmetic control circuit 8 is set so that the printing means 5 can be operation- controlled to operate printing on the time card 4 at a printing direction and printing position corresponding to the inserting direction based on the detection signal from the inserting direction detecting means 13.
