1. A process for the preparation of 2-alkoxy-1,3-dioxolanes of the formula see diagramm : EP0067361,P6,F3 optionally in admixture with 2-alkoxy-1,3-dioxolanes of the formula see diagramm : EP0067361,P6,F4 in which formulae R**1 and R**2 are identical or different and each is alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and n is an integer from 1 to 3, by reacting a formate with an epoxide in the presence of a catalyst, wherein an alkyl formate of the formula see diagramm : EP0067361,P6,F5 where R**2 has the above meaning, is reacted with a 2-alkyl-oxirane of the formula see diagramm : EP0067361,P6,F6 where R**1 has the above meaning, in the presence of a boron halide or an antimony (V) halide.
