PURPOSE: To improve the contrast and the S/N of a projected picture in a projection type display device.
CONSTITUTION: In this projection type display device, light from a light source 1 is turned into 1st linearly polarized light by polarizers 4 and 6 so as to irradiate the readout parts of spatial optical modulation elements 8a to 8c, and 2nd linearly polarized light vibrated in a direction perpendicular to the vibrating direction of the 1st linearly polarized light is fetched from the reflected light from the elements 8a to 8c by analyzers 6 and 11 so as to be projected to a projection surface 14. Plural polarizers 4 and 6 or analyzers 6 and 11 are arranged on, at least either of an optical path from the light source 1 to the elements 8a to 8c and an optical path from the elements 8a to 8c to the projection surface 14.
