PURPOSE: To provide the compound consisting of a specific N-substituted-phenyl- benzotriazole compound, having excellent weather resistance and no coloration, capable of imparting excellent weather resistance and impact resistance to organic materials and useful e.g. as a stabilizer having photo-degradation preventing effect.
CONSTITUTION: The benzotriazole compound useful as a stabilizer capable of imparting excellent weather resistance and impact resistance to organic materials and having photo-degradation preventing effect can be produced by diazotizing an o-nitroaniline compound with sodium nitrite in an acidic medium (e.g. hydrochloric acid) in the presence of a surfactant at 0-20°C to obtain a diazonium salt of formula I (R is H, a halogen, alkyl, sulfonic acid group, etc.), dropping 2,4-di-t-butyl-5-methylphenol to the diazonium salt to effect the diazo- coupling reaction at a reaction temperature of 0-20°C and subjecting the resultant azo compound of formula II to reducing cyclization reaction with sodium hydroxide-formaldehyde-quinone in an inert solvent.
