Abstract:
PURPOSE:To make character recognizing processing efficient by using a feature variable indicating the complexity of a character pattern to roughly sort an input character. CONSTITUTION:A rough sort feature/detailed feature extracting part 7 scans the pattern of an unknown character stored in a character image memory 5 in the horizontal and vertical directions and extracts the number of picture elements on a border part changed from white to black, the number of picture elements on a border part changed from black to white or the number of picture elements on both border parts, or a value proportional to the number of picture elements as a character rough sorting feature variable. A matching part 10 executes the detail matching of the rough sort of the input character using the rough sorting feature variable extracted from the input character pattern and input characters using the detailed feature variable about the kind of the character selected from the rough sorting with a dictionary.
