PURPOSE: To provide a contact charging device which can prevent making sounds of charging when a body to be charged is uniformly charged in contact with a charging member to which a voltage having an AC component is applied.
CONSTITUTION: In a contact charging device in which a charging roller (charging member) 2 to which a voltage having at least an AC component is applied is brought into contact with a photoreceptor drum (body to be charged) 1 so that the photoreceptor drum 1 is charged, a fixed electromagnet 22 is brought into contact with the ferromagnetic body portion 2a of the charging roller 2 and an AC voltage equal in wavelength to and kept in phase or 180 degrees out of phase with that applied to the charging roller 2 is applied to the electromagnet 22. The charging roller 2 is attracted by the photoreceptor drum 1 when the applied voltage is at its peak or valley; in that case, the roller is attracted also by the electromagnet 22, so the attracting forces cancel out each other and the charging roller 2 is not vibrated and hence sounds of charging are not generated.
