The method involves buffering at least some information to be transmitted, selecting different ones of several communication modes depending on amounts of buffered information to be transmitted, and transmitting information using the selected communication mode. Independent claims are included for a method for communicating information in a communications system, a modem for coupling between communications paths, a communications apparatus, a method of determining a signal to noise ratio, and a method of changing the communication mode in a half duplex communication system.
