PURPOSE: To produce a terminally unsatd. oligomer useful as a detergent, a dispersant, or an antistaining agent by subjecting a mixture comprising acrylic acid (or its salt) or its mixture with another monoethylenically unsatd. monomer, a free-radical initiator, and a solvent to high-temp. polymn.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture comprising (A) 0.5-99.95 wt.% acrylic acid (or its salt) or its mixture with another monoethylenically unsatd. monomer, (B) 0.05-25 wt.% free-radical initiator (e.g. hydrogen peroxide), and (C) 0-99.5 wt.% solvent (e.g. water) is caused to continuously pass through a heating zone to be kept at 275-450°C for 1 sec to 2 min, thus forming a terminally unsatd. oligomer represented by formula I (wherein N is a group represented by formula II; X1 and X2 are each H, NH2, or an alkali or an alkaline earth metal; M is a residue of the monoethylenically unsatd. monomer; (m) is 0-47; and (n) is 2-50 provided m+n is 50 or lower). Pref., the number average mol.wt. of this oligomer is 200-1,000; and m+n is pref. lower than 10.
