Abstract:
Method for forming a core for use in a casting process comprises mixing a particulate material with a ferric cpd. (I), namely ferric oxide, phosphate or pyrophosphate, and a water-soluble gelatin binder, comprising one or more proteins adding water to form a gelatin colloid; forming a core from the mixt. and heating the core to cure the gelatin colloid. Also claimed is a method for forming an Al casting, comprising: (a) forming a core from a mixt. of a solvent, a particulate material, (I) and a water-soluble gelatin binder; (b) heating the core to cure the binder; (c) placing the core in a mould cavity; and (d) introducing molten Al into the mould cavity at a temp. sufficient to degrade the binder, so that the particulate material flows freely from the resulting casting. The binder comprises (by wt.): 65-100% 175-Bloom gelatin, up to 10% 225-Bloom gelatin, up to 10% 300-Bloom gelatin, up to 5% gum arabic and up to 10% sugar. The core is cured at 70-80 deg.C and then dried under vacuum. The core may be provided with a water-insoluble coating. The proteins comprise glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucin, proline, hydroxyproline, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, arginine and lysine.
