PURPOSE: To regenerate a catalyst, which is deteriorated at the time of producing an alcohol efficiency at a low cost by oxidizing the catalyst at a prescribed temperature in a stream of gas and activating it by reducing treatment and to produce an alcohol in high yield and highly selectively using the regenerated catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst whose activity is deteriorated due to its use for producing an alcohol by catalytic reduction of an organic carboxylic acid ester with hydrogen is treated at 20-300°C in a mixed gas flow wherein the mixed gas consisting of hydrogen and an inert gas and afterward the catalyst is reduced and activated to be regenerated for producing an alcohol. The composition of the catalyst precursor is a catalyst prepared by carrying an active component on a carrier component or mixing them and the active component has a composition with weight ratio, copper oxide : zinc oxide : a specified oxide = 1:(0-0.25):(0-0.25) and the carrier component has a weight ratio, titanium oxide and/or titanium hydroxide : silicon oxide and/or silicon hydroxide = (100:0)-(85:15) when calculated as TiO2 and SiO2 respectively.
