NEW MATERIAL:The unsaturated alcohol substituted with a fluorine-containing aliphatic group and represented by the formula I (R1 and R2 are fluorine-containing aliphatic group, aliphatic group, aromatic group, or H, at least one of R1 and R2 is fluorine-containing aliphatic group; R3 and R4 are H, aliphatic group or aromatic group).

EXAMPLE: 1-Trifluoromethyl-1-buten-3-ol.

USE: A compound exhibiting excellent physiological activity. A water and oil repellent. A synthetic intermediate of pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals. A raw material for the production of a fluorine-containing polymer. A raw material of various esters. The characteristic feature of the compound is the chiral nature of the C atom bonded with OH.

PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be produced by treating the unsaturated ketone of formula II substituted with a fluorine-containing aliphatic group with a microorganism (preferably baker's yeast).
