PURPOSE: To simply and massively obtain an oligosaccharide having an enhanced elicitor activity from an inexpensive natural polysaccharide such as laminarin by modifying the reductive end of an elicitor activity-having saccharide inducing a plant antibacterial substance, phytoalexin.
CONSTITUTION: A natural polysaccharide (e.g. laminarin) is dissolved in a 0.1M phosphoric acid buffer solution (pH: 7.0), mixed with a hydrolase such as tunicase, and hydrolyzed at 37°C for 4 hrs to modify the reducing end of the polysaccharide. The reaction solution is concentrated with an evaporator, and subsequently fractionated by column chromatography using an active carbon column for collecting a fraction having an elicitor activity to simply and massively obtain the oligosaccharide enhanced in the elicitor activity for activating the secondary metabolic mechanism of a plant to induce an antibacterial substance, phytoalexin, which is useful as a means for molecular-biologically analyzing the infection-preventing mechanism of the plant.
