Abstract:
PURPOSE:To improve the stability of water-based emulsion polymerization of, particularly, ethylenically unsaturated monomers by incorporating at least one alkylene oxide adduct represented by a specific formula to prepare an emulsifying agent for aqueous resin dispersions. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-olefin oxide having 12 or 14 carbon atoms is reacted with acrylic acid with heating in the presence of a catalyst. Further, an alkylene oxide is added to the thus-obtained reaction composition in an ordinary way. Subsequently, the addition product is sulfated with a sulfating agent such as sulfuric acid etc. As a result, there is obtained an emulsifying agent for aqueous resin dispersions, said emulsifying agent being represented by formula I (wherein R1 represents an alkyl group having 8-30 carbon toms, R2 represents H or a methyl group, A represents an alkylene group having 2-4 carbon atoms, m is 0 or an integer of 1-10, n is an integer of 1-200, and M represents an alkali metal atom, NH4 or an alkanolamine residue).
