PURPOSE: To omit waiting time for reading, in the measurement of the width of the material by the side guides, by memorizing the width of the material when the material is tighetned and clocked by the guides, and reading the memory for a computer during the opening operation of the guides.
CONSTITUTION: When driving motors 1 receive a closing command, the side guides 4 are driven, and the material M is tightened and locked by the side guides 4. The width W of the material is detected by a position detector 6, and the result is stored and kept in a memory 7. Under this state, the width of the material is displayed to an operator by a display device 10. During the opening operation of the side guides 4, the width of the material which is stored in the memory device 7 is read out for the computer 9. In tis method, even though the side guides are opened immediately after the time of the completion of the tightening of the side guides, the width of the material is already stored in the memory device 7, and the time for waiting the guide operation is not required in order to read the memory for the computer.
