PURPOSE: To provide a sliding member which improves the wear resistance of two members which slide mutually by reinforcing the matrix of the light alloy consisting one member which slides relatively in contact with the other member with alumina silica fibers and constituting the other member of a steel subjected to a soft nitriding treatment.
CONSTITUTION: The 1st sliding member delineating a part of a top land 13 and second land 14 with a piston head 10 and piston rings 4, 5 which slide relatively in contact with each other of a piston 1 for an engine is constituted of a composite material 12 consisting of a light metal such as Al, Mg, or the alloy thereof, etc. and reinforced with alumina-silica fibers consisting of ≥40wt% alumina and the balance silica and the at least sliding surface part facing the top ring groove 6 of the top ring 4 which is the 2nd sliding member is constituted of a steel subjected to a soft nitriding treatment. The sliding member having excellent wear resistance of the two members is obtd. by the combination of the 1st and 2nd members constituted in the above-mentiond way.
