PURPOSE: To attain the reduction of the number of preparatory words of a word dictionary and to recognize patterns with high efficiency, high speed and high accuracy, by recognizing the words only to a character train having important meaning among those character strings constituting the input words.
CONSTITUTION: The input words are led to a character recognizing part 11 to be recognized every character and stored in a word information buffer 12. A word resemblance calculating part 13 receives the control of a control part 14 and calculates the resemblance between the character recognition result stored in the buffer 12 and the words registered previously in a word dictionary 15. These resemblance values are compared with each other to obtain the word recognition result to the information on the character recognition. The part 14 receives the information given from a Qn table 16 and the buffer 12 to control the recognizing action and gives the word recognition result given from the part 13 and the character recognition result given from the buffer 12 to a character recognition control part 17. The output of the part 17 is equal to the final result of recognition to the input words.
