Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prepare citric acid advantageously with effect use of palm oil, by cultivating aerobically a yeast to assimilate palm oil in a medium containing various kinds of palm oils as a carbon source, accumulating citric acid in high concentration in the medium, collecting it.

CONSTITUTION: A yeast belonging to the genus Candida or Debaryomyces, capable of assimilating various kinds of palm oils is aerobically cultivated in a medium containing various kinds of palm oils (processed products) such as crude palm oil, purified palm oil, palm olefin, palm stearin, etc. at about 25W40°C. Candida tropicalis (IFO-0589), Debaryomyces hansenii (IFO-0019), etc. may be cited as the yeast to be used. Citric acid accumulated in high concentration in the medium is isolated and purified by a combination of filtration, centrifugation, column chromatography, ion exchange treatment, etc., to give desired citric acid.
