Abstract:
PURPOSE:To separate Th in high yield by a method wherein fine powder of monazite is dissolved with acid by heating, aq. NH3 or NaOH is added to precipitate hydroxide, the precipitate is dissolved in HCl then treated with ion exchange resin, and HCl of a specified concentration is used for cleaning and elution. CONSTITUTION:Fine powder of monazite contg. ThO2, etc. is dissolved in acid by heating, undissolved residue is filtered out, the filtered solution is added with aq. ammonia or sodium hydroxide to precipitate hydroxide. The precipitate is dissolved in HCl and the concentration of acid is maintained below 4N. The HCl solution is flowed into a cation exchange resin column, the resin column is cleaned with 4N HCl, then Th is eluted by 8-12 N HCl, the eluted solution is added with aq. ammonia to precipitate Th hydroxide. The precipitate is calcined in an electric furnace to separate and recover high-purity thorium oxide in high yield. The process in this method is simpler than the conventional caustic soda method.
