PURPOSE: To obtain a long-life liquid crystal display element which has a high contrast with a low voltage, by providing a reflective polarizing element due to a minute conductive grating pattern on the rear face of a liquid crystal.
CONSTITUTION: An SiO2 layer 2 is formed on a silicon substrate 3, and a reflective polarizer 10 due to a minute conductive grating pattern where a minute conductive grating 1 consisting of a metal (such as gold) is formed on the layer 2 together with a source electrode 9 of a MOS transistor as one body. A liquid crystal 8 is driven by the electric field applied between the polarizer 10 used as an electrode also and a nesa glass 11 to which a transparent electrode is vapor- deposited. An SiO or SiO2 insulating film is coated on the polarizer 10 used as an electrode also and is subjected to the surface orientation treatment by rubbing or oblique vapor-deposition. A TN type or GH type liquid crystal can be driven by an active matrix using the silicon substrate, and consequently, a long- life liquid crystal element which has a high contrast with a low voltage is obtained.
