Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain new 6-arylpyrimidines useful in the control of a wide range of weeds.
CONSTITUTION: The 6-arylpyrimidines are compds. of formula I [where R2 is H, a halogen, (substd.) alkyl, alkoxy, cyano or the like, R3 is a (halo)alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl; R5 is an (alkoxy)alkyl or the like; R6 is an aryl; X is O or S; and R2 and R3 may form a ring], e.g. 2,3-dimethyl-6-phenyl-5-propargyl-4(3 H)-pyrimidinone. The compds. of the formula I are obtd. by reacting 2-methyl-6- phenyl-5-propargyl-4(3H)-pyrimidinones of formula II with a compd. of the formula; R3Y (where Y is a halogen, an alkanesulfonate or the like) in the presence of a base such as potassium carbonate in a solvent such as ketone.
