PURPOSE: To improve the strength and wear resistance of a cutting tool by coating the surface of a hard layer coated cutting tool subjected to shot blasting with a physical vapor-deposited layer.

CONSTITUTION: The surface of a WC base sintered hard allay is coated with a hard layer by a chemical vapor-deposition method to produce a hard layer coat cutting tool. The hard layer coated cutting tool is subjected to shot blasting, furthermore, its surface is coated with a hard layer by a physical vapor- deposition method to produce a hard layer composite coat cutting tool. In this way, the hard layer cutting tool in which chipping is hard to occur even if severe intermittent cutting is executed and excellent in strength and wear resistance can be produced.
