PURPOSE: To obtain a solid catalyst for production of a carbonic acid ester, having high activity, long catalytic life and high corrosion resistance.
CONSTITUTION: Copper (I) halide such as copper (I) chloride or a copper (I) halide and an organic compound capable of coordinating with the copper (I) halide are treated in the presence of carbon monoxide in an organic solvent such as methanol and carried on a support. As the organic compound, a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound, an organophosphorus compound, nitrile, etc., is used. As the support, active carbon, etc., is used. The above- mentioned treatment is carried out at ordinary pressure to about 100kg/cm2 and at a temperature of about 20-200°C. The catalyst component is uniformly carried on the support because the treatment is carried out in the presence of carbon monoxide gas. This catalyst is preferably used for producing a carbonic acid ester such as dimethyl carbonate, etc., by reacting an alcohol with carbon monoxide in the presence of oxygen.
