PURPOSE: To profitably produce the subject compound by using a distillation residue which is obtained on the production of 2,2-dimethyl-1,3- propanediol.hydroxypivalate monoester as a raw material, and solvolyizng the distillation residue with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A by-product having a structure of formula I as a raw material is solvolyzed with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst to obtain the hydroxypivalate ester of formula II (R1 is 1-30C alkyl). The by-product is obtained on the production of 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol.hydroxypivalic acid monoester. Sulfuric acid or para-toluene sulfonic acid are preferable as the acid catalyst. Methanol is preferable as the alcohol used for the solvolysis. The hydroxypivalic acid ester of formula II is an extremely important chemical substance as raw materials for various plasticizers and alkyd resin, and as an intermediate for various chemical products.
