Abstract:
Preparation of 3-chlorobenzotrifluoride (I) comprises reacting benzotrifluoride with chlorine gas in the presence of 0.1-5 mole % (based on the benzotrifluoride) of a metal chloride selected from ferric chloride (FeCl3), antimony trichloride (SbCl3) and/or aluminium trichloride (AlCl3), and 0.025-5.0 mole % of a cocatalyst of formula (II). Z = halo, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy or 1-6C fluoroalkyl; and n = 0-5. The ratio of metal chloride to (II) is 0.5-4.
