PURPOSE: To provide a high-speed structured document retrieving method which can obtain a retrieval result in a practically permissible sufficient retrieval time by skipping a text included in a logical structure that is not specified as an object of retrieval and excluding it from a collating process.
CONSTITUTION: In addition to the text of a document, a data base for retrieval wherein structure identifiers and their logical structure lengths are added at start positions by logical structures constituting the document is retrieved. In a forward marker decision step 40, it is decided whether or not a detected structure identifier is an identifier showing a logical structure specified as an object of retrieval once the structure identifier is detected. When the result indicates YES, an advance to a character string collation step 50 is made and retrieval is performed by the logical structure length to performs collation, thereby deciding whether or not there is a retrieved term in the character string of the text. When the result is NO, a collating process step 60 is entered, retrieval is skipped by the logical structure length, and a return to the forward marker decision step 40 is made.
