Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject alcohol, containing a specific structural unit, excellent in dispersing performances, having resistance to polyvalent metallic ions and excellent in dehydration reducing performances and useful as a dispers ing agent or a muddy water regulator for drilling. CONSTITUTION: This modified polyvinyl alcohol comprises a structural unit of formulas I to III (R is H or CH3 ; M<1> and M<2> are each H, an alkali, metal, ammonium, an alkylammonium or an alkanolammonium) and has 0.5-30.0mol% content of the unit of formula I, 99.4-50.0mol% content of unit of formula II, 0.1-20.0mol% content of unit of formula III, 0.6-50.0mol% total content of the units of formulas I and III, 3000-400000 weight-average molecular weight and preferably <5.0mol% content of unit of formula IV. Furthermore, the modified polyvinyl alcohol is preferably obtained by, e.g. carrying out the Michael addition of acrylamide to PVA in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, then hydrolyzing the resultant compound and further performing the Michael addition, etc., of a 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane-3-sulfonate thereto.
