PURPOSE: To provide a fusion splicing method for optical fibers which makes it possible to place the bare optical fibers on the corresponding V-grooves of V-grooved blocks without requiring skill at the time of setting coated fiber fixtures on a moving base and placing the bare optical fibers on the V-grooves and prevents the front ends of the bare optical fibers from touching with the V-grooves at this time.

CONSTITUTION: The respective coated fiber fixtures 6 fixed with the coated optical fibers 1A, 1B are respectively set on the moving base 11 of a fusion splicing device before the bare optical fibers 2A, 2B are placed on the V-grooves 4 for alignment of the V-grooved blocks 3A, 3B. The moving base 11 is thereafter at least partly moved to move the front ends of the bare optical fibers 2A, 2B downward together with the coated fiber fixtures 6 on the moving base 11. The bare optical fibers 2A, 2B are then placed on the V-grooves 4 for alignment in the state that their front ends cross the V-grooves for alignment.
