NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is H or 1W10C alkyl).

EXAMPLE: trans-4-[ 4'-( trans-4"-Pentylcyclohexyl )phenyl ] cyclohexanecarboxylic acid-4'''-cyanophenyl ester.

USE: A liquid crytal composition having positive dielectric anisotropy. It has broad and high liquid crystal temperature range for its low viscosity, and has high transparency. The stability to moisture, heat and light is also high.

PROCESS: The compound of formula I can be prepared by (1) reducing the compound of formula II with metallic sodium in isoamyl alcohol, (2) converting the resultant compound of formula III to the acid chloride of formula IV with thionyl chloride, and (3) reacting the acid chloride with 4-cyanophenol in the presence of pyridine.
