PURPOSE: To produce an aligning agent having a high ability to align liquid crystal and a large pretilt angle by reacting a dicarboxylic acid dichloride with an N-substituted amidodiamine compound.
CONSTITUTION: The objective polymer is obtained by reacting a dicarboxylic acid dichloride of formula I (wherein R1 is a bivalent organic group) with a diamine compound of formula II (wherein R2 is alkyl, haloalkyl, cycloalkyl, an organic group containing a benzene ring or a monovalent organic group having a steroid skeleton; R3 is a bivalent organic group; R4 is an organic group of formula III or IV; and (a) is 0-10). The amount of the side chains of the polymer used as a liquid crystal aligning agent can freely be controlled. This agent has a high ability to align liquid crystal, can develop a pretilt angle of 3-90 degrees when specified substituents are introduced into the amide groups, and can give a liquid crystal orientation film desirable for an SBE or SH display element.
