Abstract:
PURPOSE:To restrain thermal expansion of the crown section of an aluminum piston by forming at least the outer peripheral part of the crown section from metal having a low thermal expansion coefficient, and by disposing a titanium layer between the metal part and the aluminum part of the crown section. CONSTITUTION:A piston 1 having a bottomed cylinder shape comprises an upper crown section 2 and a lower skirt section 3. In this arrangement, the crown section 2 is manufactured in such a way molten metal is poured into a mold in which a spool member 8 formed of ceramic fibers 7 made of SiC, Al2O3 or the like and wound netlikely on a core 6 has been disposed, under pressurized casting of about 500atm. This crown section 2 is diffused and joined to the skirt section 3 through the intermediary of a titanium intermediate layer 9 formed in a disc-like shape, thereby both sections 2, 9 may be joined with a high binding strength.
