Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a gas permeable thin membrane capable of remarkably improving selectivity for a gas.

CONSTITUTION: This gas permeable thin membrane is a shaped gas separation thin membrane comprising a glassy polymeric material chemically modified with a reactant up to a considerable depth from the surface. The selectivity of the membrane for a gas, vapor or molecule is substantially greater than the intrinsic selectivity of the glassy polymeric material and is substantially greater than the equilibrium intrinsic selectivity of the chemically modified glassy polymeric material. A shaped thin membrane comprising at least one glassy polymeric material is exposed to an effective amount of the reactant (ozone) at an appropriate temperature for an appropriate period.
