PURPOSE: To efficiently purify an exhaust gas with low concentration of a harmful substance consuming only a small amount of energy at the time, when an amount of the harmful substance accumulated reaches adsorption capacity of an element with a catalyst coating film, by directly heating the element with voltage application and combusting the accumulated harmful substances.
CONSTITUTION: A metal fabic band 1 is immersed in a crystalline solution bath, is taken out from the bath and is dried under time and temperature control so as to grow a crystalline layer consisting of a number of crystals 2. Subsequently a surface of the fabric band 1 and individual crystals 2 are covered with a catalyst substance layer 4 comprising Pt-Pd or the like. When the fabric band 1 coated with the crystalline layer is brought into contact with an exhaust gas, a harmful substance 3 is adsorbed and accumulated thereon until reaching its adsorption capacity. Then direct heating to an element is immediately carried out with voltage application to result in heating to a required temperature and combustion.
