PURPOSE: To provide the video telephone set on which picture data are displayed through magnification/reduction without use of a special device.

CONSTITUTION: A video telephone set being a sender of picture data fetches picture data of 1/4 region shown in hatched lines in figure (a) from picture data of a full-size pattern picked up by a camera 16 without thinning a picture compression section 342 compresses the picture data and the compressed data are sent to a communication opposite party via a communication control section 33 and an ISDN line. On the other hand, upon the receipt of the compressed picture data as to the 1/4 region, the video telephone set being a receiver applies picture reproduction about the thinned picture data to be compressed and processed. The picture data of a prescribed region fetched by the sender are displayed on the display device fully on its screen as shown in hatched line data shown in figure (b).
