PURPOSE: To obtain a high contrast reflection type liquid crystal display device by preventing the degradation of contrast caused by boundary reflection of incident light.

CONSTITUTION: In the first step, a thin film 2 made of an inorganic material having 1.6 to 2.0 reflective index is formed on a surface forming a transparent electrode 4 of a plastic substrate 1. In the second step, a thin film 3 made of an inorganic material having 1.2 to 1.6 reflective index is provided on the opposite face of the surface on which the transparent electrode 4 is formed. In the third step, the transparent electrodes 4 are arranged in a matrix state on the plastic substrate 1 and a switching element is provided at each of the transparent electrode 4.
