NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I [group shown by formula II is (substituted) aromatic hydrocarbon or unsaturated heterocyclic; group shown by formula III is (substituted) condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon; R1 is H, hydrocarbon, alkoxycarbonylalkyl or cyanoalkyl; R2 and R3 are H, halogen, hydrocarbon, alkoxy, cyano, halogenoalkyl, (substituted) amino or alkoxycarbonyl]. EXAMPLE:A compound shown by formula IV. USE:A photochromic material reversibly changeable to a colored or darkened state with sunlight, mercury vapor lamp, etc., showing excellent durability. PREPARATION:An azolium salt shown by formula V (A<-> is anion) is reacted with a nitroso compound shown by formula VI in the presence of a base.
