PURPOSE: To certainly stop recording or printing by detecting paper exhausion, by treating the terminal part of wind-up paper with an ultraviolet ray absorber, and stopping recording or printing when the presence of the ultraviolet ray absorber is detected by an ultraviolet ray detector.

CONSTITUTION: An ultraviolet ray absorber (a substance absorbing light with a wavelength of 250W420nm such as a benzophenone compound) are ground and mixed along with a dispersant and the coating, impregnating or laminating treatment of the resulting mixture is applied to the entire surface of the terminal part of paper 5. An ultraviolet ray detector is provided to a recording or printing apparatus and, when the presence of the ultraviolet ray absorber is detected by said detector, recording or printing operation is stopped.
