Abstract:
PURPOSE: To avoid glare to the eves and to achieve accurate insertion of a needle into tissue by applying a black flat finish or black coloring, either continuously or with small slits, to the surfaces of a punching end and a needle section adjacent to it. CONSTITUTION: A suture material or thread 4 is attached to the opposite end portion 12 of a surgical needle 2 to its punching end 6. The surfaces of the punching end 6 and the section 8 of the needle 2 adjacent to it are given a black flat finish or colored black a chemical or electrolytic means or by a cover, either continuously or with small slits. The surface of the remaining portion 10 of the needle 2 which can constitute up to about 50% of the length of the needle 2 is made of a metal which is bare or untreated up to a thread attaching portion 12. Although the color of the section 8 flat finished or colored is black, it has the same effect as black, i.e., the effect of making any reflection of light avoid the major part of it. In an operating field, the outer form of the needle can readily be recognized. Accurate insertion of the needle into tissue is permitted at the same time that glare is avoided.
