PURPOSE: To obtain the titled soluble polymer useful for treating agents for affording metal surface with corrosion proofness, heat resistance, durability processability, lubricity and coating adhesivity, by the reaction of hydroxystyrene polymer with ruonogly cidyl ester.
CONSTITUTION: The objective soluble polymer of formula III (0≤q≤1) can be obtained by the reaction, in the presence (or absense) of organic solvent, using or not using as a catalyst acidic or basic compound, between (A) a hydroxystyrene polymer of formula I (CM is vinyl monomer; l is an any number including zero; n is an any number ≥3; X is Cl, Br, or I; 0≤P<2) and (B) a manoglycidyl ester of formula II (Y is carboxy or sulfoxy; R1, R2 and R3 are each H, 1W20C alkyl or alkenyl).
