PURPOSE: To provide a twist nematic liquid crystal display element suitable for time division driving, prepd. by using as liquid crystal material a low-viscosity nematic liquid crystal compsn. contg. a specified cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal compd.
CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal display element employs a liquid crystal compsn. consisting of (A) Nn type matrix liquid crystal (e.g. ECH or PCH liquid crystals), (B) long molecule material with a wide MR (e.g. compd. of formulas II, III and IV) and (C) cyanobipheyl liquid crystal compd. of formula I (where R is 1W4C alkyl) having a relatively low M.W. The display element has a high sharpness of voltage (γ property) and quick response and can be used for high time division driving under conditions severer than about 1/64duty.
