Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prevent the increasing of the speific fuel consumption of a compression ignition type internal combustion engine including a subsidiary combustion chamber, by employing such an arrangement that the position of a spill port that is opened and closed by a spill body is displaced from the subsidiary combustion chamber when the engine load and/or the engine speed is increased.

CONSTITUTION: The top surface of a subsidiary piston 12 for varying the compression ratio of an engine is recessed in a spherical form in the manner of constituting a part of the inner wall surface of a spherical subsidiary combustion chamber 5. Here, arrangement is such that the subsidiary piston 12 is retracted with increasing of the engine speed. With such an arrangement, the form of the subsidiary chamber 5 that has been substantially spherical at the low-speed operational range of the engine is elongated with increasing of the engine speed and swirl in the chamber 5 is reduced resultantly. Therefore, even if the intensity of swirl in the subsidiary chamber 5 is selected to suit the low-speed operation of the engine, it is prevented that the intensity of swirl becomes too high at the time of high-speed operation of the engine. With such an arrangement, it is enabled to improve the fuel-air mixing properties of the engine, that is, to enhance utilzation of air over the entire speed range of the engine.
