Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula (R is lower alkyl).

EXAMPLE: 4-methoxy-1,3-dioxane-5-carbonitrile.

USE: Useful as an intermediate of propenenitrile which is a useful synthetic raw material of vitamin B1.

PROCESS: The compound of formula can be prepared by reacting a 3-alkoxy-2- propenenitrile of formula RO-CH=CH-CN with HCHO in the presence of an acid catalyst such as AlCl3 in a solvent such as dioxane, at -20W+300°C under atmospheric pressure of positive pressure for 1W24hr. The amount of formaldehyde is preferably 1W20mol in terms of aldehyde, based on 1mol of the 3-alkoxy- 2-propenenitrile.
