PURPOSE: To improve the sealing and conducting performance between the blocks of a layer-built fuel cell by interposing separation sheets between frame- like sealing members affixed to the peripheral parts of the upper and the lower end surfaces of unit blocks, and interposing elastic conductive sheets between the end surfaces of the blocks.
CONSTITUTION: Each unit block is formed by stacking unit cells and gas-separating plates alternately and provided with carbonaceous half plates 5' on its upper and lower surfaces. Then a frame-like sealing member 9 consisting of a fluorine- system rubber or the like is affixed to the peripheral cut stage 8 of each half plate 5'. After that, in constituting a battery stack (S) by stacking an arbitrary number of the thus formed blocks 1, separation sheets 10 each consisting of a fluorine resin sheet or the like are interposed between the members 9 and 9 of the blocks 1, and elastic conductive sheets 11 made of carbon paper or the like are interposed between the plates 5' and 5'. In a layer-built fuel cell thus constituted, only a small voltage decrease is caused even when a number of blocks 1 are stacked, and the block 1 can be easily exchanged.
