Abstract:
Improved water absorbent compsns. are prepd. by physically blending a water-absorbing amt. of a lightly crosslinked water-swellable hydrophilic polymer (I) with sufficient inorganic powder (II) to increase its gel strength, blending being after polymerisation and crosslinking of (I). A process for improving the gel strength of (I) by blending with (II) as above is also claimed. Amts. (I) and (II) are both 1-99 wt.% compsns., esp. 20-90 more esp. 40-75 and partic. 50-60 wt.% (I) and balance (II); both components are essentially dry on blending; and (II) comprises a grouping or aggregate of particles below 1000 microns. (I) contains polymerised monomers of N-sulphoalkyl unsatd. salts; and (II) is clay, esp. Na bentonite or attapulgite, or a synthetic silicate.
