PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal display element, capable of carrying out gradation display, excellent in electric charge retention and useful as OA equipment, etc., by sandwiching a ferroelectric liquid crystal containing a specific compound between a substrate in which active elements are installed in respective picture element electrodes to be a display screen and a substrate having electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal display element is obtained by sandwiching a ferroelectric liquid crystal containing one or more of compounds expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are 3-16C alkyl or alkoxy; X1 to X4 are H or halogen, with the proviso that one or more of the X1 to X4 are fluorine) or formula II (R3 and R4 are R1; X5 to X10 are H or halogen, with the proviso that one or more of the X5 to X10 are fluorine) between a substrate in which active elements are installed in respective plural picture element electrodes to be a screen and a substrate having electrodes.
