Abstract:
Relatively long metal microfilaments made from film forming metal material are described. The microfilaments can be used to make superior high strength structural materials and/or can be used as reinforcing materials in plastic and rubber compositions. The microfilaments are made by forming a liquid film of molten film forming metal material across a coaxial blowing nozzle 5, applying a blowing gas 10 at a positive pressure on the inner surface of the metal film to blow the film and form an elongated hollow tube or cylinder 12 of molten metal. Protrusion 20 forms a thinned wall portion of the cylinder. A jet 13 directs fluid 14 at an angle to the axis of the blowing nozzle which breaks the tube or cylinder to form a multiplicity of metal microfilaments, and detaches the metal microfilaments from the elongated tube or cylinder and from the coaxial blowing nozzle and the detached microfilaments are carried away from the blowing nozzle. Quench nozzles 18 can be disposed below and on either side of the blowing nozzle 5 to direct cooling fluid 19 at and into contact with the molten metal microfilaments 17 to rapidly cool and solidify the molten metal to form hardened metal microfilaments 17.
