PURPOSE: To obtain excellent coating property on an electrode substrate of a liquid crystal cell without disturbing the orientating property of the liquid crystal by using a liquid crystal orientating agent containing polyisoimide comprising an aliphatic and/or alicyclic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride.
CONSTITUTION: The orientating agent contains a polymer (polyisoimide, 'special polymer I') essentially comprising a repeating unit having the structure expressed by formula. In formula, R1 is an aliphatic and/or alicyclic quadrivalent org. group and R2 is a bivalent org. group. This special polymer I is obtd. by producing a polymer by the reaction of an aliphatic and/or alicyclic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and diamine compd. and then imidizing the obtd. polymer with using a catalyst to produce the isoimide. Thereby, a liquid crystal orientated film with uniform film thickness during printing and suitable for a TN or STN liquid crystal display element can be obtd.
