PURPOSE: To obtain reproduction signals of high outputs by adding a thin magnetic film on the side surface of a magnetic head which spaces from a medium.

CONSTITUTION: One side surface 1a of a main magnetic pole 1 and the other side surface 1b are formed perpendicularly to a magnetic tape 3. The side 1a' which is included in one surface 1a and contacts with the tape 3, and the side 1b' which is included in the other side surface 1b and contacts with the tape 3 are so formed as to intersect with the moving direction of the tape 3 shown by an arrow A or B at different angles. A thin magnetic film is provided on the side surface spacing from the tape 3. Recording and reproducing are accomplished with the sides which are included in said side surface and contact with the tape 3. Since the thin magnetic film is added to the side surface spacing from a medium, the magnetic field in the thickness direction of a magnetic recording medium is obtained efficiently by the recording signal applied upon a coil in the stage of recording and the recorded magnetic field in the thickness direction acts effectively in the stage of reproducing.
