Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide an optical network unit for a switched network. CONSTITUTION: An optical network unit(ONU) 12 used for a passive optical switched network uses a high contrast rate between the energy of a calling optical signal and that of a question optical signal. The receiver of the ONU 12 is operated in a low power operation mode until communication between a central station and a subscriber is desired. In the low power mode, a photodetector is operated in an optical battery mode, and a detection capacitor is charged. The calling optical signal transmitted by the central station when communication through the ONU 12 is desired generates a voltage signal to be detected by a comparator circuit. The comparator which is triggered switches the receiver on, and transmits the output of a photodiode to the receiver, and the receiver processes the received communicated signal. The ONU 12 is restored to a low power state based on the end of the calling. When an off-hook signal is detected, the ONU 12 interrupts the question signal, and indicates that communication started by the subscriber through the ONU 12 is desired to the central station.
