PURPOSE: To improve resistance to light and prevent lowering of physical properties by light, by adding a specified hindered piperidine compd. to a synthetic resin.
CONSTITUTION: The light-stable synthetic resin compsn. is prepared by adding 0.01W5pts.wt. hindered piperidine compd. of formulaI(where R is H or methyl) to 100pts.wt. synthetic resin such as polyethylene or polypropylene. The compd. of formulaIis obtained by interaction of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidylthiocarbamic acid of formula II and iodine. Cited as examples are compds. of formulas III and IV. The synthetic resin compsn. containing the compd. of formulaIshows only a small degree of lowering of physical properties such as softening, embrittlement, discoloration, etc. even after prolonged irradiation with light.
